PART I

YOUNG READERS/ADULT SERIES

Fiction, world history, science, philosophy and art

Caius Zip, the Time Traveller, in:

Einstein, Picasso, Agatha and Chaplin

How to explain the theory of relativity, cubism,

travelling in the time and unmask a murderer.

Caius Zip, the young time traveller, arrives at Paris in 1905. The turn of the 20th century is a period that sizzles with ideas and realizations and the Universe is about to be contemplated as it never was before.

On the night that Einstein launched the famous E=mc2 formula on paper, he disappeared for a few days. Where was he?

In this work of fiction, Einstein was resting in Paris before his innovating Theory of Relativity enlightened him. At that same time, Picasso was just starting on his idea of breaking with conventional perspective.

Both characters seek the same concept: space-time relation. The encounter between art and science is finally possible by means of a limitless imagination.

Accompany the descriptions of interesting places of the belle époque in Paris and the memorable dialogue between Caius, Einstein, Picasso, Agatha, André Salmon, the poet, and Gertrude Stein, the sponsor of the novice Picasso, at the Spanish painter’s atelier on how art, literature, science, travelling in time and mystery are intertwined.

Caius penetrates the birth of the theory of relativity and cubism and also manages to solve a murder mystery with the help of his two teenage friends, Agatha Cristie, with her investigative mind and Charlie Chaplin, who provides a touch of magic to this surprising work of fiction.

After all and as Einstein once said:

“The most beautiful thing we can experience is the mysterious. It is the source of all true art and science. He to whom this emotion is a stranger, who can no longer pause to wonder and stand rapt in awe, is as good as dead: his eyes are closed”.

Napoleon Bonaparte in Russia

How some mathematical calculations can be crucial

for taking strategic decisions in this battle of empires

Caius Zip takes part in the invasion of the French army in the city of Moscow, commanded by the legendary Napoleon. He also meets the Russian marshal, Kutuzov, the man with the mission to block the huge Napoleonic army.

Caius attends a dinner in which there is a memorable dialogue with Napoleon, of a determined and captivating personality, the faithful Marshal Ney and, on the Russian side, the patriotic princess, Natasha. During the dinner, Caius listens in awe to the narration of Napoleon’s strategies and exploits, up to the moment of the invasion of Moscow.

A great lesson of strategy and of a notable human virtue: patience! Caius meets the great Russian commander-in-chief who, resisting the pressures of other officials and even of the tsar himself, persisted with his strategy of avoiding direct combat with Napoleon’s Grande Armeé. Kutuzov retreats and hinders the life of the invaders, cutting their supply lines and constantly beating them with guerrilla tactics, until the arrival of his great ally: General Winter.

The participation of Caius will be important in this historical moment, as he solves enigmas and learns with the Russian marshal how some mathematical calculations can be crucial in taking strategic decisions in this battle of empires.

After the story, in a very original manner, Napoleon tells us his memories of that time.

An impressive narration on the effort of the Egyptians in the building of their great monuments.  Caius will participate in this effort with the calculations of area and volume of the pyramids

In the famous battle of Kadesh, an important location in present day Syria, between the two largest eastern powers of that period, the time traveller will help the great pharaoh to win the battle against the Hittite army. How? Aiding in the construction of traps where he will use his newly acquired knowledge of Geometry.

More than acquiring knowledge, this book is also about a young person acquiring maturity, as the Greek scientist said at the end of the story:

“One cannot enter the same river twice as new waters are always flowing. Everything is constantly flowing.” The Greek turned to look at Caius and concluded, “Including you, my friend. You are changing, Caius. You are ‘growing’, in the true essence of the word.”

“I am not feeling any of that, Heraclitus. I still have so many doubts. I am still only a kid.”

“You don’t need to feel, boy. Time is your ally and with it, you will discover all you need to know. Never forget that on your journeys.”

Returning Home

167 pages

This book comprises four stories. In the first story, Caius returns to his room where his travels began and discovers that, for those he left behind, only 30 minutes passed since his disappearance. Does everything go back to normal? Are his travels over? For the meantime, there is nothing better than to take part in a card contest where the players have to compete with the help of the Set Theory.

Caius’ destiny, however, does not allow him to remain in the same place and takes him to the centre of the Stock market crisis of 1929, in New York. In this city, together with a completely depressed banker, he learns about the need to control negative numbers, in the form of debts and the vertiginous fall of the stock exchange, and how the study of simple and compound interest can help them. The 20’s are characterized by the Cotton Club, Charles Chaplin, Duke Ellingtonjazz and Charleston and the building of the Empire State Building….

After this crisis, what better than to relax in another journey in time? What about a sea voyage? In this third adventure, Caius finds himself on a British Destoyer in hot pursuit of a German submarine, a U-Boat. The crew is anxious to put its hands on the most powerful German weapon, the Enigma machine, and so change the course of the Second World War, granting victory to the allies. Will mathematics serve as an ally for this purpose? Discover how analyzing coordinates can be crucial in a battle.

As a conclusion to this journey, nothing better that to know the future and see how your friends are doing, how mathematics is timeless and how Caius Zip interacts with first degree inequations.
